„Why did you choose where you live?“ war die Antwort des Artist-in-Residence Will Kwan auf meine Frage, was er andere Künstler, Kuratoren, Wissenschaftler fragen würde, die mit dem Ausstellungsprojekt The Global Contemporary verbunden sind. Was mich an Kwans Frage interessierte, war ihre eindringliche Skepsis gegenüber der Behauptung, dass die globalisierte Kunst ein Raum oder Feld sei, der keinen (oder jedenfalls keinen konkreten) Ort mehr habe. Will Kwan ist in Hongkong geboren und lebt in Toronto. Stephanie Syjuco, die in Karlsruhe italienische Taschen häkelte, ist in Malila geboren und lebt, wie Ala Ebtekar, in San Francisco. “Timeliness” is a lecture-performance by Raqs Media Collective (RMC) that Monica Narula and Shuddhabrata Sengupta performed at the ZKM as part of the event “Curating in Asia” on December 9, 2011. Speculating on the concept of “time”, Raqs Media Collective intertwines financial and political matters related to capitalism with ontological issues related to ephemerality and permanence. Als die 3. Athen Biennale am 29.10.2010 über YouTube in einem Videospot ,What happens in Athens in October 2011?‘ fragte, war die krisengeschüttelte Zukunft des Landes kaum absehbar. Unter dem Titel Monodrome, griechisch für Einbahnstraße, plante das Kuratorenteam um Nicolas Bourriaud einen Film und eine Großaustellung, die das Athen der Gegenwart porträtieren sollte. Der französisch-dänische Künstler Thierry Geoffroy traute ihren Plänen nicht, adaptierte ihr Konzept und filmte zur Biennale selbst auf Athens Straßen. 3473 kg of raw material from 42 countries, more than 70 rare and, at times, toxic raw materials from hydrochloric acid, oil through to coltan; a vast expenditure of energy and transportation across endless kilometers of land and ocean. In her animation A Global Positioning System (2006) British artist Melanie Jackson has dissected the GPS system into its component parts, tracing a path through its international origins ranging the rubber plantations of Sri Lanka, Congolese tin mines, South African gold and the manufacturing plants in China before finding destinations for individuals across Europe. It is a work not so much about decomposing an object into its technical components but a reverse process of unfolding the worlds and lives it has touched and that we in some way carry around with us in everyday technologies.
